ADAM has a compelling winsome quality, but crosses several boundaries. For example, sex becomes one of the primary motivations in their relationship. Also, Adam learns that lying is okay. When Beth mentions that God created everything, Adam corrects her by explaining to her the evolutionary view of the universe. The production quality of ADAM is excellent, with wonderful performances. ADAM is a compelling, well produced movie, but it fails to fulfill its potential and has mixed, conflicted morals and worldviews.
The movie opens with a voice over of the female lead character, Beth, stating that her favorite book as a child was THE LITTLE PRINCE. Her father always called her the space traveler in the story, but when she met Adam, she realized that he was the little prince space traveler, and she was the stranded pilot.
The movie opens at the funeral of Adam’s father. Soon thereafter, Beth moves into his building in New York City. Adam suffers from Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism that makes him ruthlessly blunt and honest and socially very insecure. He is also an electronics genius.
Beth, who is a teacher at an experimental elementary school, takes an interest in Adam. He does frighten her at times with his bluntness, but she comes to appreciate him and even love him. When he mentions sex, she refuses but eventually guides him step by step into a sexual relationship. She also engineers a meeting with her parents.
Adam loses his job designing electronic toys because the toys he designs are too expensive. To prepare him for the job search, Beth teaches him how to be more socially subtle and adept.
Adam finds out by reading her schedule that she manipulated him into meeting her parents. Adam blows up at her for lying and trashes her apartment in a violent rage. She travels up to the suburbs to stay with her family. His father’s best friend tells him he needs to make up with Beth because everyone lies. Adam ventures out into the unknown world to find Beth.
This movie has a compelling winsome quality, but, regrettably crosses several boundaries. Sex becomes one of the primary motivations of Adam and Beth’s relationship. Adam is taught that lying is okay. Beth mentions that God created, and corrects her by explaining the evolutionary view of the universe.
