More Detail:
AMATEUR is a romantic thriller about an amnesiac and an ex-nun who shelters him. Isabelle Huppert and Martin Donovan star as the confused woman and the man without a clear past bound together in a complicated plot involving pornography, blackmail and an international crime. The story revolves around how difficult it is to create a new identity for yourself, especially when you do not know who you really are in the first place.
AMATEUR is a tightly controlled, well rehearsed movie that offers strong performances and sumptuous cinematography. The movie raises some interesting questions. If an amnesiac cannot remember what he has done, can he be held accountable? If so, can his repentance be sincere if he really does not know the extent of his deeds? This character tries, and it is sad that the one character who rejects his repentance is the one who wears a silver cross. Surprising for a movie dealing with pornography and torture, there is no full nudity, no explicit sexual activity and comparatively little violence. Most of this occurs off-screen, but these vices are strongly and clearly implied. The movie juxtaposes its black humor against the hope of four characters trying to escape their pasts. However, it succeeds only as another shaggy dog story trying in some ways to imitate PULP FICTION.
