BATMAN RETURNS is a gripping artistic adventure full of bathos that pits the Dark Knight of Gotham City against Penguin, Catwoman and mega-millionaire Max Shreck. Though very entertaining and less risque than its predecessor, BATMAN RETURNS is still a dark film, mixing subtle sadomasochism with revenge, innuendo and a perverse twist of the story of Moses. The story begins as baby Penguin is rejected by his parents and set adrift in a basket in the sewer. Weaned by black-beaked friends and filled with revenge, Penguin wants to kill every first-born child. Therefore, he embarks on his diabolical plan to destroy Gotham City, and its savior, Batman. However, Batman faces an even greater challenge from the Penguin’s ally, the lethally seductive Catwoman.
BATMAN RETURNS will lure many teenagers and adults to the box office. Not only is it engaging and well-produced; it also does not have extensive offensive language and overt sex. However, it is a dark film filled with violence, vengeance and perverse innuendo. While few parents will keep their teenagers away from BATMAN RETURNS, discernment of the film noir aspects of the movie is highly recommended. In fact, discerning Christians could use its storyline as a springboard for presenting the Gospel and man’s need for forgiveness.
