More Detail:
CHLOE’S MOUNTAIN is a drama about a young woman facing a tough choice to pursue a life that the world wants to offer her versus attending a Christian college.
Young Chloe (Kenzie Mae) has experienced tragedy with the loss of her parents and has been living with her grandma (Donna Bristol) in an idyllic environment. Tapping into Chloe’s singing and songwriting gifts, her friends have enticed her into the hard-edged rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle with all its trappings, which goes against the faith-grounded life of her grandma. Grandma is unfazed by Chloe’s worldly pursuits and feels challenged when the local church ladies indicate that Chloe needs some behavior modification. Grandma instead woos Chloe with the only thing that appeals to almost everyone:unconditional love.
However, when Grandma unexpectedly passes away from a sudden heart attack, Chloe rekindles her anger toward God. As the only next of kin on Grandma’s will, Chloe is faced with a proposition. If she goes to a Christian university for four years and successfully graduates, she will inherit Grandma’s farm and house.
Chloe accepts the challenge and attends the university, but she finds out sooner rather than later that she could be expelled for lack of following the rules and piling up demerits. Eventually, she develops new friendships that help her to shift her focus to her Heavenly Father. Chloe learns the value of hard work, persistence, true friendship, sacrifice, and a relationship with Jesus Christ and His Word. However, it always seems like she could lose everything at any moment. Will she commit fully to trusting God or continue to backslide after each victory?
CHLOE’S MOUNTAIN is told from a strong Christian worldview. There is a scene where Chloe and her worldly friends are smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. There is also a brief rave scene, but the scene doesn’t portray any obvious worldly elements. The movie’s setting is in the beautiful Paradise, Calif. area that tragically burned not long after the movie production took place (two special screenings will take place in Paradise in August 2019). One of the critical, high-emotion scenes is poorly lit and thereby loses some of its effect. One of the movie’s sub-themes is the comparison between “legalistic Christianity” and a “loving your neighbor approach” to invite others into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Although the portrayal of the “church lady,” Chloe’s grandmother, initially seems like a caricature, her warmth and genuine love for Chloe truly reflects God’s love.
