When lawyers write well, their training in logic and commitment to the facts can produce an excellence in their fiction that makes them very popular. John Grisham is the current case in point, but Grisham never established a brand name attorney. Before Grisham, there was the great Erle Stanley Gardner who wrote the Perry Mason mysteries, one of the great brands in literature. Now, Craig Parshall is off to a terrific start and may even establish attorney Will Chambers as the next great brand.
In CUSTODY OF THE STATE, the second novel featuring attorney Will Chambers, a humble Georgia farm family, Joe and Mary Sue Fallows, are threatened with having their sickly child taken into the custody of the state by an over-zealous social worker and her legal cohorts. Mary Sue takes her child, Joshua, and flees, and her husband Joe is arrested.
In hiding, Mary Sue calls Northern Virginia attorney, Will Chambers, to come down to their little town in Georgia and protect her and her son. Will discovers a deeply biased legal system and high level corruption as he fights to keep his client from being thrown into jail and her son from being taken from her into the custody of the state.
This brief plot analysis does not do justice to the richness of the book. I found myself deeply moved throughout the book, sometimes to tears. Craig Parshall has a terrific writing style. The characters take on flesh and blood, and the situations become compelling. Although very few novels make it into Hollywood movies, this is one that deserves translation to the big screen. Bravo! Gardner’s Perry Mason may have finally met his match.
