More Detail:
Geena Davis harkens back to the days of swashbuckling swordplay in her latest venture as pirate Morgan Adams in CUTTHROAT ISLAND. Morgan Adams comes from a family of pirates. Her father, Black Harry, is killed by her Uncle Dog. Her father’s last words to her are to find the treasure that her grandfather stowed away on a remote island. She buys a doctor being sold as a slave named William Shaw to help translate her map. With Shaw’s help Morgan finds the island. Morgan and Shaw find the treasure, but Dog finds them and captures Shaw, with Morgan escaping. A total battle breaks out between Morgan and Dog’s ships. Both sides are hit hard, but Morgan endures the fight, kills Dog, saves Shaw, and gets her treasure back.
This movie could have been charming, but Geena Davis just does not make the role of Morgan Adams believable. All of her physical stunts look fake and ridiculous. Roles are reversed in this movie. It is the woman who is the strong one, and the one who saves the day. This could have been a good family film, if there wasn’t so much bloody violence. The movie is entertaining, although a bit predictable. It would have been a much better movie with less violence, and if Morgan Adams was more realistic.
