More Detail:
DIGGSTOWN is the story of Gabriel Caine (James Woods), a con man recently released from prison, who sets up a sting operation to win back a small Georgia town from the corrupt John Gillon (Bruce Dern). Gillon managed to steal the town by fixing a local boxing match and permanently injuring the town’s boxing hero, Charles Macum Diggs. Caine bets Gillon $100,000 that his friend, former prizefighter “Honey” Roy Palmer (Louis Gossett, Jr.), can defeat any ten of the county’s men in the boxing ring during a 24-hour period. Gillon accepts. As strategies are planned, and the boxers are bribed, the battle ensues and the stakes rise until Gillon has the whole town wagered. Whoever loses will be humiliated and perhaps pay with his life.
Director Michael Ritchie, no stranger to competitive themes (THE BAD NEWS BEARS, SMILE and DOWNHILL RACER), keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. The boxing scenes are of a ROCKY rather than RAGING BULL variety, but are effective nevertheless. Woods, Gossett and Dern all give strong performances. However, upon close inspection, much of DIGGSTOWN falls apart and is highly manipulative. DIGGSTOWN is in the lightweight movie division, but it is weighed down by low-life characters and considerable gutter language.
