More Detail:
While D.R.O.P. SQUAD sounds like the title of an extremely violent movie, this film surprises the audience with an emotionally charged melodrama that deals with complex and contradictory racial issues within the African American community. The D.R.O.P. Squad (Deprogramming and Restoration of Pride Squad) is an officious group of African Americans who nab other blacks whom they feel have lost their way and turned their backs on their heritage. They then attempt to dissuade them from their “Uncle Tom” ideology by using demeaning and immoral tactics. The movie’s main character is an advertising executive who, under duress, finally admits to his behavior of selling-out black people to further himself. The story concludes with him residing in a squalid apartment, reflecting on his mistakes and focusing on his heritage.
D.R.O.P. SQUAD’s writers go overboard to convey their message to an esoteric audience who may well have appreciated a less exaggerated plot. Further, the Squad’s effort to convert their victims is extremely hypocritical since their own behavior is highly immoral. The actors compensate well for the poorly written script, confusing plot and obvious low-budget nature of this paradox film. Fraught with obscenities, profanities, blasphemy, and unnecessary stereotyping, this poorly-made film is little more than propaganda.
