Although the filmmakers argue their cases for the illegal immigration of Holocaust survivors very convincingly, the Bible teaches against civil disobedience unless the ruling authority is violating God’s Law. Was civil disobedience the best way to help the Jews get their own land in Palestine? When Jesus was questioned about whether to pay taxes to the grossly oppressive Roman government, He replied, “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and to God the things which are God’s.” (Mark 12:17) With a powerful and well-written script, Morley Safer’s narration is subtle, professional, and convincing. Understated, home movie footage and fuzzy black and white still shots of the era add to the authenticity.

In 1947, the Haganah bought the 330-foot flagship “President Warfield” and converted it to carry 4554 Jewish WWII Holocaust survivors to Palestine. The British rulers of Palestine intercepted the unarmed vessel, seized it and shipped the refugees back to Germany. The ensuing worldwide outrage forced the British to give up control of Palestine. A new, divided state of Israelis and Arabs was formed.
