EXTREME JOB, an action comedy from South Korea, tells the story of a dysfunctional cop squad. The squad has been trying to apprehend the people behind a huge drug ring in Seoul. They use a fried chicken restaurant as the perfect stakeout. They take the business over from the owner and operate the restaurant as if it’s their actual career. However, when they start making a lot more money than they do as police, they find it difficult to stay focused. When one of the drug ring leaders offers to buy the restaurant, make it a franchise, and use it to deliver narcotics, they begin to break the case.

EXTREME JOB has been a box office hit in Korea, and the hilarious antics of the characters prove why. The humor is akin to “The Three Stooges,” but few, if any, of the jokes are predictable. EXTREME JOB has a strong moral worldview favoring law and order, with some positive Christian elements. However, it does have a high degree of violence and foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

Very strong moral worldview throughout with brief positive Christian elements as the story focuses on the classes good vs evil battle with the good guys prevailing while maintaining their integrity, a man mentions in passing that his wife is a devoted Christian, and there is mention of saying a prayer;

About 79 obscenities and profanities (including four “f” words, one GD, and six light profanities), plus an obscene gesture and a character mentions that they get diarrhea;

Violence:

Very strong and strong violence with some blood but not extremely graphic includes police battling criminals, a man grabs a woman out of a car and throws her to the ground, and then she does the same back to him, a few car collisions as well as people getting hit by buses, many examples of slapping or play fighting as well as actual hand to hand combat, a man is burned and cut from cooking with blood, multiple scenes involving blood and gun shots, a man’s leg is cut with a knife brutally, a few disturbing scenes involving characters biting each other during combat, one cop who has the nickname “zombie” has a scene where he almost contorts like a zombie and then bites a man;

Upper male nudity as men are fighting and again when a man is getting a Korean massage/scrub;

Drug use shown as the cops are attempting to bust a drug dealing ring in Seoul so although there is a lot of content throughout it is always shown as negative and being done by the “bad guys” and shows the repercussions of drug use, characters are often shown smoking cigarettes or a cigar, one of the cops suggests drugging the drug dealers in order to catch them, one of the drug ring leaders has a goal of “an era of meth, drugs, and cigarettes for all,” people are shown with bruises and bloodshot eyes from shooting drugs into their bodies although it never shows someone with a needle, one of the rookie cops snorts some type of drug but is reprimanded immediately and doesn’t do it again, one drug buyer opens a box and samples each package of drugs individually;

Miscellaneous Immorality:

Moderate amount of miscellaneous content, multiple examples of gambling, it’s presumed that one of the cops has had a previous problem with gambling, a few examples of lying/deception, and a man and his wife are shown to have a less than stellar marriage throughout until he begins making more money and buys her gifts.

More Detail:

EXTREME JOB is a South Korean action comedy, set in Seoul. It follows the unusual antics of five cops in a squad who have the mission of busting a huge drug ring in the city. The leader of the squad, Captain Ko, is close to retirement, and he’s working to get one final promotion so he can then retire with honor.

However, after his squad has an embarrassing criminal chase in the streets, causing many car accidents and injuries to civilians, his boss comes down on him hard, warning the squad not to mess up again. The other police squad, who seem to have it all together and even walk cool, have just had some success in apprehending a few drug dealers in the city. The leader of this squad gives Captain Ko a tip about the ring leaders of the drug world, telling Ko it doesn’t matter who does it, he just wants to catch them.

Captain Ko takes his squad and begins to spy on an apartment building, supposedly the location where these bad guys hang out. Finding a fried chicken restaurant across the street, they order some food while keeping an eye on who enters and exits the building. The restaurant owner finds them entertaining as they rush to the window every time they think they see someone, and he gives them the chicken on the house. He tells them business is really bad, and he’s going to be closing down the restaurant.

The cops talk among themselves. They decide to buy the chicken restaurant and use it as a way to get more information on the drug dealers. They figure out that they will wait until the apartment across the street orders some chicken. Then, when they deliver the chicken, they can find who they’re seeking and arrest him.

This scheme takes way longer, however, than they expected. Also, one of the squad members, Ma, has an amazing chicken recipe, and business is booming. Soon, they don’t even have time to think about the mission, because they’re so busy waiting on tables and cooking the chicken. After being in business for a while, they finally get a delivery call for the apartment across the street. They freak out momentarily and then suspiciously deliver the chicken. However, an older woman answers the door and tells them the other guys have moved.

Disappointed, they continue working in the restaurant, wondering if it’s all pointless. Out of the blue, a man walks into the restaurant, pulls out a briefcase full of cash, and makes them an offer. He tells them he admires their business and wants to make them into a franchise. They agree, but suspect there’s something suspicious about the man. They begin to investigate all of the new restaurants and follow the delivery drivers. They find there are a lot of strange things happening. The quality of their product is way down, and people are tossing out their bags as soon as they’re delivered. Clearly, something fishy is occurring, and this dysfunctional squad has to figure out what it is and hope that it leads eventually to nabbing the drug dealers who are destroying people’s well-being all across the city.

EXTREME JOB is a hilarious, fresh story that was very popular in South Korea. The heroes are skilled professional cops, yet seem to find themselves in very unusual situations. The comedy is a mix of styles, sometimes slapstick, but always very clever and witty. In a day when there is rarely a comedy that isn’t perverted, unintelligent, or predictable, EXTREME JOB is a breath of fresh air.

EXTREME JOB has a strong moral worldview favoring law and order. There’s also mention of being a devoted Christian, as well as a reference to prayer. Despite this, EXTREME JOB has a high amount of foul language and strong violence. The drug use is condemned, and violence is a result of the line of duty for the heroes, but some scenes can be disturbing, especially for younger, more sensitive viewers.
