FROM HELL presents a strong, but mixed, pagan worldview that includes occult premonitions and references to the gnostic Freemasons, a Romantic, feminist, anti-capitalist attack on Christian civilization (but not Christianity itself), some lesbian homosexual elements, a crude sex scene, graphic nudity, and some Christian references and redemptive elements. In the end, the troubled Detective Abberline sacrifices his own life to protect two other people. Strongly atmospheric, FROM HELL would rather wallow in gore and Abberline’s occult, drug-induced visions rather than provide an exciting, intelligent, triumphant story.

The story of Jack the Ripper, the famous serial killer who terrorized prostitutes in Victorian England during the fall of 1888, still fascinates many people. Numerous movies have been made about the five gruesome murders, and numerous books have been written about the possible identity of the killer, who remains unknown to this day. There was even a STAR TREK episode that revealed the alien life form responsible for the murders. A STUDY IN SCARLET (1965), where fictional detective Sherlock Holmes tracks down the killer, is probably the best movie ever made on the subject. No movie, however, has fully shown the bloody carnage that this paragon of evil really wrought.
Until now, that is.
FROM HELL, starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham, is the most gory, violent re-telling of the legend of Jack the Ripper’s nefarious “career.” The movie renders the mad killer’s crimes in virtually every brutal detail. Johnny Depp plays Detective Fred Abberline, an opium-smoking widower who has visions and premonitions of the murders. Heather Graham plays one of the prostitutes being stalked by Jack the Ripper. Ian Holm plays the Royal Family’s aristocratic doctor who helps Abberline. Among the suspects are a prince, a violent pimp and his gang, the head of the British secret service, the director of the London police force, and a sadistic psychologist. The wealthy suspects all belong to the Order of Freemasons which runs England, according to the script.
