GRUMPIER OLD MEN reunites Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as two cantankerous Northerners out to catch fish and women. This time around, the season is summer. John Gustafson and Max Golden spend time out on the lake trying to get Catfish Hunter, a legendary catfish. On dry ground, John is apparently happily married to Ariel, and Max couldn’t be more envious — and lonely. Max’s son, Jacob, wants him to start dating again. Jacob plans to marry John’s daughter Melanie. Max has little desire to date anyone until Maria Ragetti comes to town. She arrives to turn the cherished local bait store into an Italian Ristorante. When John and Max catch wind of this atrocity, they do everything in their power to stop her from going through with it. In the process, Max falls in love with Maria. All of this leads up to a big wedding and a big catch on the lake.
If you like fishing, are from the great white north or know grumpy old men, you will find something to like about this movie. We discover that John and Max really do care for one another and want the best for their families. Care should be noted, however that these men have foul mouths, and there are implied sexual encounters. This is not a movie with a message. It is pure entertainment except for the foul-mouthed, skirt-chasing antics of these GRUMPIER OLD MEN.
