HOLLAND

"Dark Confused Tale That Leads to Nowhere"

What You Need To Know:

HOLLAND is a movie streaming on Prime Video about a woman who lives a seemingly perfect life in the Dutch town of Holland, Michigan. As the story unravels, the bored housewife wants to have an affair with a fellow teacher. However, when the two try to pin adultery on her husband, they find something much darker than what they first thought. The movie spends a great deal of time going nowhere. One disgustingly violent scene renders it unredeemable. There is also adultery, violence, and some obscenities, including half a dozen "f" words. So, MOVIEGUIDE doesn't recommend HOLLAND for any audience.

HOLLAND features excellent acting by Nicole Kidman and Gael Garcia Bernal. The settings and costumes are brilliant, and the soundtrack evokes suspense. However, the movie lacks a compelling screenplay. It contains a Humanistic Worldview with “self” at the Center. The movie also features covert anti-Christian elements with a sadistic church deacon at the center. Moreover, the main characters are depraved of morality, and the villain is downright demonic with no real known motivation. Ultimately, HOLLAND is a slasher film hidden in a dramatic story. Extreme caution is recommended for all audiences.

Nancy Vandergroot has a perfect life in utopia. She’s married to Fred, a church deacon, who is also the town’s eye doctor. Fred always says and does the right thing. Her son, Harry, is everything to her, but he’s growing up and becoming independent. Fred is away a lot. Nancy finds herself bored and lacking fulfillment in life. She finds excitement in imagining mysteries that need solving. Nancy confides in her co-worker Dave that her husband may be having an affair. Instead of confronting her husband, she convinces Dave to help her break into his office to spy on him.

Along the way, Nancy decides to have an affair with Dave, who rejects her initially, telling her it would be wrong—the two plot to find a way for Nancy to leave her marriage. Dave follows Fred on one of his suspected cheating escapades. He discovers a much darker secret that has perilous consequences for all involved. When Dave catches Fred in the act of brutal murder, a fight for survival ensues. Dave thinks he has killed Fred. He hides the truth from Nancy about who Fred was and what he did, though Nancy already knows.

HOLLAND features excellent acting by Nicole Kidman and Gael Garcia Bernal. The settings and costumes are brilliant, and the soundtrack evokes suspense. However, the movie lacks a compelling screenplay. The audience may invest in the story’s first half but will probably lose interest when the movie takes a dramatic, unexpected turn in the middle. No one likes to invest in half a movie to find out we are in a completely different plotline in the second half. Moreover, the main characters are depraved of morality, and the villain is downright demonic with no real known motivation. Ultimately, HOLLAND is a slasher film hidden in a dramatic story.
