More Detail:
In HOW TO BE A WOMAN AND NOT DIE IN THE ATTEMPT, a 42-year-old housewife named Carmen Maura struggles with family problems and male attitudes. Carmen is married to Antonio, her third husband, who works as a record producer and expects home to be a refuge after an exhausting day’s work. Carmen has two children, Sergio and Marta, from her previous marriages and has adopted Diego, Antonio’s son from his previous marriage. The Spanish have a way with their droll humor; however, this family’s superficial relationships and empty worldviews are not funny but sad. Two incomes are the norm, but not due to economic necessity. In addition to being a housewife, Carmen works as a journalist for a newspaper. Pitifully, Sergio smokes pot and Marta carries condoms in her purse. Feeling overwhelmed, Carmen contemplates another divorce. Eventually, Carmen leaves Antonio hanging in a surprise ending.
Although the movie is occasionally funny, it wallows in foul language, sexual situations and drug use. Overall, HOW TO BE A WOMAN AND NOT DIE IN THE ATTEMPT falls short, offering little insight into the world of men and women. This tableau of “everyday life” is generally sophomoric.
