More Detail:
Michael Winterbottom is a gifted filmmaker who loses his focus completely with IN THIS WORLD.
IN THIS WORLD tells the story of two Afghan youths, whose uncle pays people smugglers to smuggle the boys from a refugee camp in Pakistan to London, England. Enayat is the boy that the uncle is sponsoring on this treacherous journey. Jamal convinces the uncle that he should go too because he speaks English. They have a little bit of money and barely the clothes on their back. Their uncle gives Enayat a Sony walkman to remember his family, and Jamal uses it to bribe a border guard. The trials and tribulations of the journey culminate when they are locked into a container with other refugees and put on a ship from Istanbul to Trieste. Some of the refugees suffocate. It is a horrifying moment.
Michael Winterbottom made this movie under the banner of Revolution Films to appeal to the British government to let in refugees from the Muslim world. He traveled to Afghanistan and found natives, including the two young boys, to take part in his movie. Although he tries a creative mix of animated maps and narration to keep the story alive, many sequences of the story are tedious and boring, just like real life itself. A little more scripting would have helped tremendously. As it is, some of the movie is unwatchable, mostly because of the use of low-budget digital camera and lighting techniques. It may be that Michael started out with a political ax to grind, as he says in his film notes. Preaching in movies generally does not work, whether it’s Christian or something else. Movies are a storytelling medium, and the story here is too thin. The audience will feel for these kids, but in truth, the movie just shows that their life was better in Afghanistan, and there may be better ways to solve their plight than inviting millions of Muslims to move to England.
Furthermore, from a spiritual perspective, for years, the Middle East was a productive, fertile crescent. Islam has devastated most of that. What makes England so attractive is the direct result of its Christian heritage. Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq can all be recovered if they would shake off the horrors of Islam and accept the free gift of grace in Jesus Christ.

SUMMARY: IN THIS WORLD tells the story of two Afghan youths, whose uncle pays people smugglers to smuggle the boys into London, England. Although the movie tries a creative mix of animated maps and narration to keep the story alive, many sequences of the story are tedious and boring, and need a far more redemptive, Christian worldview.
