More Detail:

TriStar has seemingly given America the quintessential, politically correct romantic comedy of the 90s in IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. New York cop Charlie Lang is married to Muriel (a grating, Rosie Perez in an embarrassing racial stereotype). In lieu of a tip at lunch, Charlie offers half of whatever he wins on a lottery ticket to a sweet, unpretentious waitress, Yvonne. The ticket nets four million dollars, which Charlie shares (to his greedy, selfish and opportunistic wife’s chagrin) with Yvonne because, after all, “a promise is a promise.” However, that statement proves not necessarily so when it comes to marital fidelity. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is a “boy-meets-girl, boy-commits-adultery, boy-loses-wife-and-girl, boy-wins-girl-back” story — a story wherein the entire city of New York rallies behind our two lovers, and their adultery is rewarded by the generosity of the citizens of New York.

Starring Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda, this PG-rated film is about selfless giving with an unsettling backdrop of condoned adultery and racial stereotyping. This is a dangerous movie with an overt theme of “whatever enriches self must be good.” A more appropriate title might have been BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD, IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU.
