More Detail:

Set in the 22nd Century, JUDGE DREDD presents a horrid violent look at the future where the world is called “The Cursed Earth”, Americans live in only a few “megacities”, and the law is carried out by judges who arrest, try, and carry out sentences all at one time. Sylvester Stallone plays Judge Dredd, the most feared of judges among the criminal class. Also included is Rico, an escaped criminal and a genetic mistake who received all the bad genes of a judge. Rico dresses up like Dredd and kills a reporter. Though he is ably defended by fellow judge Hershey, Dredd is convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison. Dredd escapes prison, escapes a cannibalistic cult, and returns to fight Rico who wants to create a new world order.

The film, perhaps unintentionally, gives a thoughtful commentary on justice vs. mercy, anarchy vs. order. It teaches that justice without mercy is tyranny and that order cannot be prescribed by outside law, but only if law is written on the hearts of man. Except for some very offensive blasphemous remarks by the cult, there is no recognition that God is the final judge and that we will all stand before his judgment seat. The film suggest that man is the final arbiter of law. Yet, for its philosophical theme, this film remains just another whiz-bang shoot-em-up by Stallone, filled with murder and mayhem. Extreme caution should be exercised.
