In the unrated French film LOVE AFTER LOVE, Lola is a woman who struggles to find love between two men, both of whom have other lovers and children. Tom is a studio musician with a wife and two daughters. David, a high-class architect, is her live-in lover has two boys who live with his ex-lover. Contemporary love is so complex, n’est-ce pas? While Lola ping-pongs between lovers Tom and David, they ping-pong between Lola and their individual “families.” The acting is wonderful: the respective wives portraying heart-wrenching pain as they battle for the fidelity of their men. After Tom breaks Lola’s heart by returning to his wife, Lola attempts to hang on to her relationship with David by springing the news of her pregnancy, hoping that he will want her and the child. Ah, love, isn’t it sweet?
Though well directed and finely acted, this film is an amoral tale of lust, obsession and love (in that order), without any moral center except the characters’ own desires. It is dispiriting to watch this story unfold while expecting (or hoping) to step onto some firm moral ground, only to sink with the characters into their abysmal, self-seeking lives. The story’s absurd “happy ending” will leave viewers empty, yet grateful that the end has arrived.
