MEAN MACHINE is only mildly diverting, even though English actor Vinnie Jones has charisma, despite his lack of good looks. By favoring the prisoners over the guards, the movie is somewhat politically correct. It also contains plenty of strong foul language. The movie avoids strong moral relativism, however, by revealing in one scene that even the kindliest prisoner can still be guilty of a heinous crime. Thus, the movie shows that both guards and prisoners need redemption. It even includes a brief Christian funeral in one shot. Due out on DVD July 16 after a brief release in February in the United States and the rest of the world, MEAN MACHINE is a lackluster British remake of the 1974 comedy with Burt Reynolds, THE LONGEST YARD. Vinnie Jones stars as Danny Meehan, a talented professional soccer player sent to prison on an assault charge. Everybody in the prison is angry at him, either for his celebrity status or his failure to win professional games, not to mention wasting his good fortune by getting himself locked up in prison.
The warden and the prison guards have a championship soccer team. Danny eventually ingratiates himself with the other prisoners. They challenge the guards to a scrimmage match for some prison privileges. Already in hock to a bookie, the warden puts a lot of money on the game and encourages the guards to do everything they can to win. The guards enlist a prison snitch, a plan which ends in tragedy for one of the most beloved convicts, who over the years has become a model prisoner even though he is a murderer. Everything comes to a head at the big soccer match.
