This year’s Oscar winner for best foreign film, MEDITERRANEO, pales in comparison to former recipients. It is a thinly plotted male fantasy about soldiers spending years on a sun-soaked Aegean island with a prostitute during World War II. The story begins with eight Italian soldiers being dispatched to a remote Aegean isle. The island appears deserted, until a pretty shepherd girl leads them to a village. For the three years, the soldiers loaf, play soccer, fish, and consort with the prostitute, Vasillissa. Only Farina doesn’t indulge, since he is saving himself for marriage. This sentiment wins the heart of Vasillissa, and the two marry, after they fornicate. When the war ends, the British cart the Italians home. Farina and his bride stay behind, and, years later, Lieutenant Motini and Sergeant Russo return.
MEDITERRANEO plays like the ambling accounts one might hear from aging veterans reminiscing about the great time they had during WW II. Even the shepherd girl, overtly pregnant at the film’s end, waves blissfully to the two departing soldiers who cavorted with her for three solid years. No one seems to care about her long-term prospects as they sail into the sunset.
