MOLLY

"Physical and Sexual Awakening"

What You Need To Know:

Every few years Hollywood makes a movie about an adult trapped by some rare disease who suddenly awakens to the world around them. Then they regrettably go back to their previous state. This time, Elizabeth Shue plays MOLLY, which is also the title of the movie. Molly has a rare form of autism. Her brother Buck, who has denied her existence for many years, is not happy when he suddenly has to take care of her. Especially when she gets him fired from his job. Then, a beautiful doctor says that there is a new operation which may cure Molly. Molly starts to awaken after the difficult operation and becomes a brilliant woman. However, she remembers all the times Buck avoided her, hence the message: show compassion for those less fortunate.

Regrettably, the dialogue in MOLLY is too simplistic. Also, Molly’s sexual awakening gets a little too vivid and graphic. Like many contemporary movies, MOLLY is a mixture of morality and compassion, hedonism and noble savage romanticism. Too bad, because it is a wonderful topic, and Elizabeth Shue delivers a good performance that deserved better writing with a more focused worldview.
