MRS. PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dorothy Parker, leader of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of leading journalists and playwrights in the 1920s. These were the movers and shakers of the New York literary scene, with Mrs. Parker as the prime mover among the literary avant-garde. A sense of camaraderie existed among this convivial, progressive group. In the movie, Mrs. Parker seems to be caught up in a swirling atmosphere of revolving relationships and sexual immorality. Looking for literary success as well as love, Parker drifts from one suitor to another, a pitiable alcoholic woman in spite of her enormous literary talent and ability.
Jennifer Jason Leigh’s acting is superb. She portrays Mrs. Parker as brilliant, but a slave to her own passions. Campbell Scott is also excellent as Parker’s close friend Robert Brehley, a witty intellectual. This friendship is the only one for Mrs. Parker which does not culminate in sexual activity. A story of rampant sexual immorality and prideful self-indulgence, Parker’s life is plagued by disappointment and disillusion. Even receiving the coveted Major Peabody Award, her greatest achievement, does not bring her fulfillment. She faces the end her life alone as an alcoholic. Worst of all, this movie provides no answers for this depressing demise.
