More Detail:
MY WEEK WITH MARILYN is a clear depiction of the iconic sex figure Marilyn Monroe. Taken from just one production Marilyn worked on, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN shows how Marilyn Monroe was able to mesmerize men.
As a young man, Colin Clark always dreamt of being in the movie industry. His time comes when he talks his way onto the film set of THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL starring Sir Laurence Olivier. Colin becomes a third assistant to the director. With his keen interest in learning, Colin is able to be in the background of many breaking moments. His desire to learn and be part of the production heightens even more when Marilyn Monroe, a woman he idolizes, comes on board.
Everyone has a glorified image of Marilyn, thinking of her as the idyllic sexual image of a woman, but it does not take long for her deep-seated insecurities to come out. Marilyn is constantly late to the set, making the greats of British Theater wait for her to produce and reproduce the simplest of lines on camera. This leads Marilyn into a spiral of insecurities, drugging herself in order to forget about them. With a handful of people always around Marilyn, feeding her words of affirmation, she gets by and starts to produce something very special on the set.
After a fight with her third husband, Arthur Miller, however, Marilyn is left in tears, fears, and insecurities that everyone will eventually leave her. She seems to understand that those insecurities have been triggered by her mother leaving her at a young age and the fact she never knew her father. Marilyn has a charm, which every man falls for, but she loves them and leaves them, notably not understanding love herself.
Colin seems to be everywhere Marilyn is. Because of this, she starts to call specifically for him. This eventually leads Colin himself into a hopeless state of love. Marilyn is able to seduce every man, without even a kiss.
MY WEEK WITH MARILYN is very well made, with a simple but entertaining plot line. Overall the acting is incredible and the script is well constructed, with deft dialogue. However, a lot of caution is required due to the fact that Marilyn was clearly a sex symbol who was broken and insecure. There are no sex scenes in the movie, but Marilyn does kiss Colin though she’s married. MY WEEK WITH MARILYN seems to have a romantic worldview, implying that love is the key to happiness. There’s also plenty of strong foul language.
Overall, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN is a beautifully produced movie, but it shows a secular world searching for love in all the wrong places. The film clearly shows that Marilyn Monroe was a sex symbol who mesmerized many people but had to deal with great emotional insecurity in her heart and mind, including drug abuse.
