NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT turns out to be more accurate than the filmmakers intended. Leslie Nielsen returns as the thick-headed police detective, Frank Drebin, and, as in earlier parodies of the same genre, becomes the butt of endless jokes. Newly retired Drebin is pressed back into service to foil a terrorist plot. The plot involves the Academy Awards where a bomb has been planted by a convict named Rocco in a recipient’s envelope. Drebin goes undercover in prison to gain prisoner Rocco’s confidence and help him escape. Later, when they get to the Academy Awards, Drebin tries to discover the envelope where the bomb is planted. One of the funny scenes at the Awards is of Mary Lou Retton cartwheeling to the podium to accept her Best Supporting Actress Award while Pia Zadora sings.
NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT has been constructed with endless crude sexual jokes and double entendres. If it were not for the many offensive sexual innuendos and references, this movie would be fun to watch. The film moves well, and the actors display competence and a good sense of comedic timing. Nevertheless, the plot material reveals some jadedness and probably suggests that it is time to move on. Let’s hope that “The Final Insult” will do just that.
