NEXT FRIDAY

What You Need To Know:

Pot comedies by Cheech & Chong and other low-life pop culture icons did not fare so well in the 1980s. Regrettably, they have made a comeback. Rapper Ice Cube has made a sequel to FRIDAY, a 1995 pot comedy which earned millions in video rentals. Titled NEXT FRIDAY, the sequel reveals the further misadventures of Craig Jones. A pothead from the ghetto trying to avoid the local bully, Craig hides out in the suburbs with his uncle and his cousin, Day-Day. A comic run-in with some Hispanic gangsters ensues.

Like its predecessors, NEXT FRIDAY displays almost no sense of comic timing. Although Craig shows a little bit more intelligence than those around him, the movie plays like the Three Stooges times ten. To some people, that fact alone will be an argument against the marijuana use which the movie strongly advocates. After all, why would anyone want to imitate Craig and his cousin’s pot use since they act pretty stupid and Day-Day loses his job because of it? Such a sophisticated argument, however, is liable to be wasted on the misguided people who might like this piece of trash.
