NOSTRADAMUS, which thankfully is having a very limited release, is a biography which steadfastly and doggedly preaches to its own self-selected choir. A brief introduction to NOSTRADAMUS shows him as a young boy who has terrifying dreams of mass destruction and a woman burned at the stake on idiotic charges. The remaining 110 minutes shows the adult Nostradamus as he battles the Church in his struggle toward Enlightenment in both scientific and mystical realms. As a young medical student, he is portrayed as being ahead of his time in practicing naturopathy for the plague and in engaging in sexual adventure as well as a hodgepodge of astrology and Arabian mysticism.
Those who feel that the 16th-century French seer accurately predicted modern warfare, the Third Reich and the end of the world will no doubt find this interminable, violent and offensive film inspiring. The rest will squirm with boredom or stew with aggravation over the relentless promotion of quasi-mysticism masquerading as drama. Not only are the visions created with old stock footage of JFK, Saddam Hussein, et al, but the Church is portrayed as a gang of louts and petty tyrants, ready at a moment’s notice to arrest and torture anyone who does not tow their narrow-minded line, especially doctors who think they can prophesy the future.
