PASSED AWAY

Content:

(LLL, V, S, M, Ab) 25 obscenities & 10 profanities (8 are exclamatory); man's fingers jammed in mailbox & man falls in hole designated for grave site; reference to transvestism, woman goes into labor at funeral, illegitimate pregnancy, contemplating adultery, & implied fornication; and. nun promotes liberation theology heresy & casual reference to falling from grace.

More Detail:

In PASSED AWAY, the funeral of Jack Scanion reunites his four estranged children: Johnny, Frank, Nora, and Jackie. The oldest, Johnny, unbeknownst to his wife and children, contemplates adultery with his father’s mistress. Frank’s wife ignores the guests and makes a list of all inheritable items in the house. Nora is a nun who promotes liberation theology which causes Frank to gasp: “You’re a communist!” Jackie, returns home with her ex-husband, though they’ve been divorced for three years. However, at the wake, she romances her old beau from high school, who fills her in on what happened since they broke up: “I got…Born-Again [and] got un-Born-Again….” Later, they end up fornicating. PASSED AWAY continues with interwoven storminess that brings together the family, in spite of their problems.

PASSED AWAY fails because of a lackluster script and its inability to shed light on the grim subject of death. Most disappointing is Bob Hoskins, who confuses his role as Johnny by wavering between a British accent and a street-wise American one. In fact, ultimately, PASSED AWAY digs its own grave and buries its viewers in the tedious process.
