REACH THE ROCK takes place during one hot summer night in a small town. Twenty-one-year-old Robin smashes the window of an appliance store in a last attempt to get the attention of his high school sweetheart before she leaves for New York. Robin winds up in the town jail under the authority of police sergeant Phil Quinn. Throughout the night, Robin steals his cell key and goes in and out of jail smashing more windows and bewildering Phil. Through their discussions, it becomes evident that Phil sees himself in Robin when he was younger, fighting against the same obstacles. The two men are transformed by the time they part the next day.
Mixing drama and comedy, REACH THE ROCK has much to say about the struggle of entering adulthood and finding a direction for one’s life. Regrettably, its subplot involves the sexual misadventures of Phil’s dim-witted deputy, Ernie. Strong foul language also mars this movie. Strong performances by William Sadler as Phil and Alessandro Nivola as Robin lend dramatic weight to this tale about a young man who must learn to be mature, and about a older authority figure who must discover how to let go of an unjustified grudge
