More Detail:

ROB ROY is a beautiful epic Scottish folk tale of love and honor, seriously marred by a violent dark side which is portrayed all too vividly in the movie. The story is set in the picturesque Scottish highlands where Robert Roy McGregor supports his family by raising cattle. He plans to enlarge his holdings by buying more cattle with money borrowed from the Marquis of Monrose. The plot thickens when a friend, entrusted to bring the money to Rob Roy, is brutally stabbed and the money stolen by Archibald Cunningham, an associate of Monrose. To stay out of prison, Rob can bear false witness against the Duke of Argyll as proposed by Monrose, but Rob refuses to violate his honor. As a result, he is hunted by the evil Cunningham who torches Rob’s house and violates his wife. Rob escapes only to finally meet Cunningham in a contest for repayment and retribution.

Robert Roy McGregor takes pride in keeping his word and his honor. This is a lesson that holds great promise, but gives only a glimmer of light in the movie, as it is weakened by violence and immorality. Regrettably, the darkness in the movie will prevent children and many moral adults from enriching their knowledge about the meaning of a personal word of honor. Even so, the Scottish highland location provides a breathtaking backdrop for the excellent cinematography, acting and direction.
