In the film SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, successful Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda), after a tiff with boyfriend Sam, places an ad in the paper for a single white female roommate and settles on Hedy (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a bedraggled loner. Hedy is convinced she has found a spiritual sister in Allie. She idolizes her, wishes she could become her and endeavors to pattern herself after her, which annoys Allie. As Hedy mounts her crazed campaign to become Allie’s one true friend, her behavior becomes an aggressive series of lies, games and manipulations. When Sam reconciles with Allie, it proves too much for Hedy. So, with Allie’s and Sam’s engagement announcement, Hedy moves swiftly to effect whatever damage is necessary for Allie’s situation to remain unchanged.
As Hedy, Leigh does a superb job, and Hedy comes across somewhere between an innocent child and a headstrong adult. Fonda, too, turns in an admirable performance as the cool-headed and trusting Allie. Although well done and suspenseful, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE is shocking and revolting in its considerable upper female nudity and fornication episodes. Even more shocking is the lack of embarrassment on the part of the actors who play these parts.
