SIX-STRING SAMURAI

What You Need To Know:

IN BRIEF:

Part rock opera, samurai film, spaghetti western, and apocalyptic science fiction fable, SIX-STRING SAMURAI is a low-budget B movie. It tells the story of a man with a sword and a guitar trying to get to Las Vegas to earn the late Elvis Presley’s crown as King of Rock and Roll in an America controlled by the Soviet Union. Facing strange bands of road gangsters and musicians with menacing weapons, the man looks like Buddy Holly. He teams up with a small orphaned boy during his journey. Together they eventually have to face a rival musician called Death.

Strongly reminiscent of THE ROAD WARRIOR, the movie that made Mel Gibson a star, with echoes of THE WIZARD OF OZ, this PG-13 movie has excessive action violence with a high body count but no blood or gore. There is only one mild obscenity and no sex or nudity. Finally, although the Buddy Holly hero clearly shows some moral compassion, the movie also has a pagan worldview because it suggests that winning musical titles can be a main goal in one’s life. Too bad the movie didn’t aim higher because the filmmakers display talent. The last shot is almost worth the price of admission
