Men and the women who love them southern-style is the theme of SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT, starring Julia Roberts as Grace King Bichon, a woman who frantically races through life with her husband, Eddie and daughter, Caroline until she witnesses her husband kissing a beautiful blonde. Her “perfect” life turned upside down, Grace realizes her life is not really her own and decides to challenge the traditional norms that she has obediently followed. Her response to her husband’s affair sets off a chain-reaction of confrontations including a pivotal one with her father, Wyly King. When Grace succeeds, she gives the whole town SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. For a story dealing with such serious themes, this film is a very successful comedy.
Although the movie deals with adultery, it does not condone it. Rather it attempts to show the healing that can come about when real issues are dealt with openly, and when resentment and anger give way to forgiveness. This is not a feminist movie in the sense that all men are portrayed as insensitive creeps. Instead, this film attempts to balance the scales between men and women who fail in relationships. In fact, the women in this movie are admittedly at fault for the way their relationships have worked out. Regrettably, their discontentment with their marriages are marked by excessive foul language.
