What You Need To Know:

In SUPERNOVA, the paramedic spaceship Nightingale gets a new co-pilot, Nick, who was transferred from combat due to a drug problem. The Nightingale receives a distress signal from a rogue moon. The female Dr. Evers (Angela Bassett) realizes that the distress signal is from her former lover, Carl. When the Nightingale performs a dimensional jump, one of the preservation chambers leaks and the good captain’s internal organs are spread out all over the Plexiglas. Therefore, Dr. Evers has to kill the captain, and Nick has to take over. When they arrived at the rogue moon, Carl, who has become a dimwitted superman, boards and takes over the ship. Carl plans to kill off everyone and mate with Dr. Evers to start a super-race.

SUPERNOVA was designed as a high concept intellectual film, but through mishandling by all involved, turned into a dud. What's left is extreme violence and bunch of people wanting to fornicate. With all of this sexual discussion and excessive violence, it is surprising that this got a PG-13 rating. Therefore, beware. This is not a film for children. Please think twice before allowing your child to see SUPERNOVA.

More Detail:

The most interesting aspect of the pedestrian movie SUPERNOVA is how it got made. Originally designed as a high-concept intellectual film, the studio panicked and brought on another director and editor to make it more action-adventure. The resulting mess was rescued form oblivion by Frances Ford Copolla, in the editing bay. The final product was released under a new “Alan Smithee director” pseudonym: Thomas Lee. In other words, nobody wants to take credit for the final product. Frankly, as other reviewers have said, the final product is not that bad in terms of structure, but it suffers from pedestrian plotting and is ill-conceived.

The movie opens with the audience being introduced to the crew of the paramedic spaceship Nightingale. Two members of the crew while away their time fornicating. Benjamin (Wilson Cruz) has developed an intellectual affair playing chess with the spaceship’s computer. A new co-pilot, Nick Vanzant (James Spader), has been transferred from combat to the paramedic ship. Evidently, Nick had a drug problem with a drug called Hazen. Dr. Kaela Evers, played well by Angela Bassett, had a boyfriend named Carl with a Hazen addiction which drove him to psychopathic acts including ruining her chance for having babies.

The Nightingale receives a distress signal from a rogue moon. The doctor realizes that the distress signal is from her former lover, Carl. To get to the moon named Titan, in the manner of so many movie space objects, Nightingale has to do a dimensional jump. Needless to say, when they do it, one of the preservation chambers leaks and the good captain’s internal organs are spread out all over the Plexiglas. Therefore, Dr. Evers has to kill the captain, and Nick, in spite of his drug rehabilitation, has to take over.

When they arrive at Titan, a lifeboat comes shooting out containing a young survivor. Soon, it is revealed that this survivor has brought with him a 9th dimensional object which contains the essence of creation itself. This object has been placed in the Universe by superior beings to be discovered by evolving beings (who have progressed to the stage where they can discover such a thing), so that when it is discovered it will explode and annihilate the evolving beings, while rejuvenating the universe. Carl himself has been rejuvenated and has become something of a dimwitted superman.

During the dimensional jump, the Nightingale ruptured a fuel tank, so Nick goes to get fuel at Carl’s assistance. Carl starts killing off the people in the ship and plans to kill Nick on Titan. Nick is a smart guy, however, and gets back to the ship so that the mano-a-mano battle can begin, with Dr. Evers as the much sought after prize.

Whatever SUPERNOVA was supposed to be, it turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of people wanting to fornicate. Even Carl wants to mate with Dr. Evers and set up a super race. With all of this sexual discussion, it is surprising that this got a PG-13 rating. Therefore, beware. This is not a film for children. Please think twice before allowing your child to see SUPERNOVA.
