TESTAMENT OF YOUTH is a beautifully shot movie. The cinematography, set design and costuming are well done. Alicia Vikander does an excellent job playing Vera Brittain. The movie is well plotted with poignant moments. It’s sometimes a bit slow, but is captivating overall. Even better, TESTAMENT OF YOUTH has a strong Christian, moral worldview of serving others. The main character gives up her dreams to be a nurse for the wounded in World War I. That said, the movie has some violence and romance. So, Movieguide® advises caution for older children, especially pre-teenagers, for TESTAMENT OF YOUTH.

TESTAMENT OF YOUTH is a about a young woman who sees her world change when World War I breaks out. TESTAMENT OF YOUTH is a captivating movie with a strong Christian, moral worldview of serving others, but it does have some violence.
Vera Brittain lets her family know that she is not interested in getting married, but would rather be studying at Oxford. Then, one of her brother’s friends, Roland, walks into the room, and the two spark. Roland tells Vera he will help her study for the entrance exam to Oxford, but she refuses him.
Later, Vera and Roland get to talk about their mutual interest in writing. Once Roland goes back to school, the two start to write letters to each other. When Vera goes to take the entrance exam for Oxford, she didn’t realize she had to write an essay in Latin. Turns out that her score was better then she expected, and she got into Oxford. The first day Vera is going to Oxford, Roland signs up for World War I. Will Vera and Roland be able to be together?

The movie begins in a Catholic Church and practically ends in a Catholic Church. There are also mentions of the supernatural and the after life. Because the main character sees the pain in the war from being a nurse, she becomes a pacifist and makes a speech about not participating in revenge. Also, the movie shows blood and war wounds that may be too strong for some to see, but are not over the top.
