(B, L, N) Highly enjoyable compilation of song and dance numbers from vintage MGM musicals. A few mildly risque lyrics (too sophisticated for younger viewers to understand) and one slightly revealing shower scene in a pre-Hays Code musical.

More Detail:

Having spent several years methodically reviewing the MGM vaults after editing THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, Bud Friedgen and Michael J. Sheridan have put together another winning assortment of magic moments, out-takes and a disaster or two for THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT III, with much better success than they had on the first sequel. This film features the athletic and creative choreography of Gene Kelly, the grace and discipline of Fred Astaire, the statuesque polish of Cyd Charisse, the fiery tap dancing of Eleanor Powell and the innocent energy of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. In addition, there are terrific excerpts from both famous and obscure musicals and some fascinating behind-the scenes shots.

All of the sequences are narrated by prominent performers from that period, including Gene Kelly, Mickey Rooney and June Allyson. A few still look terrific, while time has taken its toll on many of the others and, while generally engaging, their ongoing congratulatory remarks begin to wear thin after awhile. On the whole, THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT III is great, clean fun, entertaining enough to be worthy of its title. Some of MGM’s all-time classic numbers have already appeared in the original THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, but this sequel also demonstrates, with great vitality, what could be accomplished when taste was as important as talent.
