Reported to be a great commercial success in Europe, THE AGES OF LULU is purely pornography in all of its stupid, pointless and degrading excesses, a non-story of relentless abuse of the human body and spirit. Full of explicit sexual perversion, horrifying and degrading sexual abuse, rape, nudity, obscenity, and profanity, this film is nothing more than an attempt to disguise pornography as serious drama.
The title character, Lulu, is followed through a series of offensive sexual encounters which serve mainly to promulgate pornography’s rape myth that forced sexual activity (assault) is actually desired by the victim. True to modern pagan conventions, Lulu falls in love with and even marries the man who abuses her on their first date, her brother’s best friend. Many, if not most, victims of date rape can thank this sort of material for forging their assailant’s attitude toward women. Also true to the spirit of pornography, character development in this film is nonexistent, dialogue is minimal and music seems to have been piped in from the nearest elevator. The only point to be made successfully by THE AGES OF LULU is that human beings appear to have an unlimited capacity to degrade and destroy the gift of sexuality.
