The movie is somewhat episodic because it is not driven by the plot, but by the characters. THE AMATI GIRLS is an emotional, heart-rending movie about an extended Roman Catholic Italian family, wherein prayers to the saints are part of the fabric of their lives. Of course, many non-Roman Catholic theologians would stress that prayers in to be directed to God and no one else. However, the message is not that the prayers are answered, but rather the answers to one’s problems are marriage and family, even if those marriages and families have their own defects.
A common meeting ground for the family is large family meals. Up front, this large gathering of the clan introduces the audience to the different members. Mom is still grieving over the death of her husband and wants her oldest girl, Grace, to sew a burial dress for her.
Grace is a spiritual leader of the family. She has submitted herself to her husband, who is a little bit of a lout. When anybody needs anything, they turn to Grace.
Dolores, a mentally retarded sister, continually asks Grace to tell her to which saint she should pray, and Grace is always there with an answer.
Another sister, Christine, has a husband who never shows up. He is a workaholic, and Christine and their daughter long for his company.
Seeing the defects of that family, another sister, Denise, refuses to make a commitment to a marital relationship.
Many trials and tribulations occur. Character growth happens in a positive way; although prayers are not answered, it is clear that faith and family are extremely important. After a major tragedy, in a state of frenzy, Dolores shatters the statues of the saints in the church. Afterwards, in the end, however, even Dolores finds a romantic interest.
THE AMATI GIRLS preaches many moral virtues. The character development is superb, and the acting is superior. The movie, however, is somewhat episodic because it is not driven by a plot line, but by characters. It is regrettable that there are some lightweight profanities and obscenities in the movie. These are rebuked once, but once is not enough.
In all, this is a captivating tale. This family seems like everyone’s friend, and, there are many lessons to be learned from the charming AMATI GIRLS.
