(LL, VV, NNN) 16 obscenities & 4 profanities; extended views of tendrils from alien plants crawling all over victims, into ears, nostrils, etc.; decomposing bodies; multiple shootings, including gun-to-head suicide; child thrown out of helicopter; brief but repeated male & female nudity.
More Detail:
The film, THE BODY SNATCHERS, brings yet another version of the original THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and shares a similar plot line: a smart professional begins to notice that numbers of people are complaining that their loved ones are not “themselves.” Soon they stop complaining, and the professional discovers large “pods” producing slimy duplicates of people (including, of course, himself), while the actual people disintegrate. The takeovers by the alien body snatchers are shown in vivid detail, with plant tendrils creeping all over the hapless victims as they sleep, including wormy probings into nostrils, ears and mouths. As the whole community and army base fall victims to the “pods,” a helicopter pilot rescues Marty, and they flee from the disastrous area to obtain help.
Although BODY SNATCHERS is arguably the most technically accomplished of the three film versions, it gives us less satisfaction than the first version because it is unclear whether Marty and the helicopter pilot will find help when they land in Atlanta. However, instead of the “all is lost” tone of the 1978 version, the fleeing helicopter trashes a whole convoy of pods. The current version is more violent than either of the others, and more uninhibited with harsh language from all concerned (even the aliens).
