THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY is a well-crafted, but dangerous film directed by Clint Eastwood. Eastwood plays National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid on assignment in Madison County, Iowa, who becomes involved in an adulterous affair with housewife Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep). Told through the reading of a letter written by the recently deceased Francesca to her two thirty-something children, the film illustrates her 1965 affair when her husband and children left for a four day outing to the Illinois State Fair. When Kincaid asks Francesca for directions to the Roseman bridge, Francesca offers to hop in his pick-up and show him the way. As he brushes her knees while accessing the glove box, the flames of lust stir within Francesca, and, by day two, they have begun their physical affair. As the time of her family’s return approaches, Francesca must decide to stay in Iowa, or run away with Kincaid to begin a new life with her thrilling lover.
Streep continues to present Oscar-caliber performances, while Eastwood seems wooden and old for the role of Kincaid. Yet, together they do a convincing job at encouraging immorality. Acting as a two-hour endorsement of adultery, this film’s portrayal of a lonely woman finding happiness in the arms of an exciting loner blatantly subverts the Seventh Commandment.
