THE HARD WORD is about three carefree brothers who seem to spend more time in prison than in the free world. Their crooked lawyer works with other corrupt policeman and officials to occasionally release them for arranged heist jobs. Though successful at crimes without violence, they are often double-crossed and sent back to prison. The brothers are each unique and believable as siblings. They clearly love each other more than their crime sprees. An opportunity to steal $20 million dollars comes up, and with it a chance to double-cross their scheming lawyer. Will they survive to live out their dreams? Or will they end up in prison once again?
THE HARD WORD is an Australian crime drama/comedy which attempts to offer a bit more character study than your typical heist movie. Still, it is a long way from the very sanitized OCEAN’S ELEVEN. This story is overly long, unnecessarily violent, and filled with coarse language, greed, and sex. There is so little that is enjoyable about THE HARD WORD, viewers are inclined to walk out or dwell on the technical deficiencies of the harder seat in the movie theater.
THE HARD WORD benefits from a talented cast who try to offer some inkling of passion or humanity to this soul-less story. Do not be fooled by the star power of THE HARD WORD: this is a depressing movie bereft of any moral value.
Early in the story, while the three brothers are waiting for a chance to steal an armored truck, a red traffic sign is spotted in their view: “Wrong Way – Go Back.” Moviegoers at the screening should have obeyed those hard words at that time.
