The quality of the movie looked like it had been shot in video, then transferred to film, and the sound often made it hard to hear parts of the monologues. Of all the comics, Harvey comes off the best, even though his performance was also often laced with strong profanity. Harvey has a professional stage presence that’s very appealing. He also is capable of carrying the audience to emotional heights, especially when he’s talking about the emotions behind 70s music. THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY is a concert movie featuring four African-American comics from television. Hosted by Steve Harvey of THE STEVE HARVEY SHOW and directed by Spike Lee, the movie also features the comedic talents of D. L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac. Although going to church is one of the topics, and Harvey opens the show with a brief thanks to God, the R-rated movie contains profanity-filled monologues about everything from how to raise children to why 1970s soul music is better than today’s hip hop and rap to graphic discussion about sex.
