Billed as a high-energy, sensually-charged, explosive combination of two mega-stars with mega-reputations for action and sexuality, THE SPECIALIST is mediocre … and Stallone and Stone are less than special. As a small child Sharon Stone witnessed the execution-style murder of her parents by a Miami crime family. Now an adult, she still has one thing on her mind: revenge. What can she do to ease her emotional pain? Where can she turn for help? Well, ex-CIA explosives-expert hit-man Sylvester Stallone is available, and through a computer BBS no less. He is a “specialist” who is unexplainably semi-retired. Revenge is the thing, and outfitted with the absolute latest in electronic gear, as well as trained with lots of fighting moves, Stallone gets the job done.
Along with an abundance of foul language, brutal violence, full nudity, graphic sexual immorality, disrespect for women, holes in the storyline, and an incredulous plot, the filmmakers have given the bad guy all the best dialogue and created a hero that is an amoral loner who exacts his own form of justice by brute strength. The filmmakers have overlooked the fact that their protagonist is a murderer and portray him as “good” by giving him his own “code” by which to live. In THE SPECIALIST, revenge is sweet, justifiable and easily attainable as long as you feel you are right.
