Robert Duvall plays Mr. Cox in THE STARS FELL ON HENRIETTA. It tells of a down-on-his luck, eccentric oil man who finally strikes it rich in Mid-Texas in the 1930’s. When Mr. Cox comes into the little town of Henrietta, his “friends” walk the other way. Threadbare and poor, Mr. Cox does everything in his power to persuade members of the town to join him in an oil deal. A kind farmer Don Day shelters him for the night. In the morning, Mr. Cox proposes a partnership deal to Day, but Day sees Cox as a huckster and sends him on. Utterly poor, Mr. Cox takes a job as a dishwasher. For a time, Cox gives up on his dream, but it is soon revived when Mr. Bigstone, a rich oilman, comes into town. Mr. Cox steals from Bigstone and the restaurant owner and comes to Day for a deal. Though angry and untrusting, Day decides to let Cox drill on the farm. With the attention of the whole town, the men slave day and night in search of their financial future.
The film ultimately has a moral conclusion commending hard work, pursuing dreams, church, prayer, and giving thanks to God. It is flawed by the red-handed activities of Cox, yet in the end, he pays back the men with interest. Despite these matters, this film presents a pleasant diversion upholding marriage and hard work in the face of terrible obstacles.
