What You Need To Know:
While the art direction, photography, jazz-filled soundtrack, and characterizations are unquestionably strong, the script has much redundant material. All the characters are loathsome, especially Tom Ripley. He is a complete anti-hero with no redeeming qualities. Furthermore, it is really unclear what the point of this movie is. In past movies and stories, such as ROOM WITH A VIEW and TEA WITH MUSSOLINI, people came to Italy to study art, appreciate beauty or find safety. This movie turns Italy into a hedonistic playground where anything goes, including murder, fornication, sexual perversion, and feeding obsessive behaviors.
