THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG originally released in 1964, stars Catherine Deneuve as Genevieve, a 17-year-old woman who lives with her widowed mother above their umbrella shop. She is in love with a 20-year-old auto mechanic, Guy, who lives with sickly grandmother and a pretty live-in nurse Madeleine. When Genevieve tells her mother about her young love, her mother shows concern. Guy receives his draft notice, and they spend their last night together in a romantic evening. Later, we find out that Genevieve is pregnant with Guy’s baby. Genevieve, feeling abandoned by Guy, who is still at war, agrees to marry a jeweler named Roland. When Guy returns, he goes back to his old job and marries Madeline.
THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is a modern opera, created to be accessible to the public, shot on location in the city of Cherbourg. All lines in the movie are sung, and the actors do a fine job conveying emotion through the big-band style music. This re-release into the US market gives film buffs the opportunity to see an amazing Technicolor print complete with Dolby sound on the big screen. Without violence, foul language and only implied sex, it is a unique movie going experience.
