THE WEDDING GIFT is an extremely well-crafted film depicting the true story of a sturdy English couple, Deric and Diana, facing a mysterious debilitating illness. The gift referred to in the film’s title is actually twofold. One is Diana’s determination to walk down the aisle, unassisted, at her son’s wedding. The other “gift” is somewhat more problematic. Convinced that her days are numbered, Diana sets out to arrange for a new woman to enter into her husband’s life. While she means well, one would be hard-pressed to endorse this supposedly selfless act on Diana’s part as morally sound. While no sexual intimacy is shown or implied, these relationships strain the boundaries of the mutual exclusivity that form the bedrock of a marital bond.
While a right-to-die agenda might easily have sprouted from this scenario, the film’s writer and director instead opted for understatement, witty dialogue and the drama of everyday hassles to tell this true story with surprising power. The film is effective even for those who don’t concur with all of the actions these characters take. Only a smattering of profanity, a morally problematic situation and the absence of a spiritual dimension mar this otherwise excellent and engrossing film.
