Political discussion regarding National Socialist Germany; debate over Hitler's anti-semitism and Leni Refienstahl's involvement.
More Detail:
“Feminist pioneer” or “evil Nazi”? Leni Riefenstahl has been called both. A new documentary, THE WONDERFUL, HORRIBLE LIFE OF LENI REFIENSTAHL explores this complex, talented woman. Her film TRIUMPH OF THE WILL was the most famous propaganda tool in Nazi Germany (1935). She (now 90 years old) claims that she knew nothing about politics and that TRIUMPH OF THE WILL was an artistic not a political film. She contradicts herself later in the film by claiming that Hitler forced her to make the political film in order to enlist young soldiers. Leni’s life is exciting. In 1932, she produced, directed and starred in DAS BLAUE LICH, a fairy tale which she filmed on location in the mountains. Leni also made THE OLYMPIAD, a film of Olympic swimmers and divers that included underwater photography. In the 1960’s, she turned her filmmaking talent towards Africa. She lived with a tribe for years while filming their lives. During the 1970’s, her filmmaker’s talent turned to the underwater world of nature and animals. At age 90, she is still an avid scuba diver, filmmaker and sportswoman extraordinaire.
This woman is truly a character with an incredible life experience. Whether she is the last living Hitler supporter or a brilliant filmmaker, Leni Riefenstahl will certainly entertain you in this unusual, informative documentary.
