TRESPASS pits two redneck fire fighters-turned-fortune hunters against a gang of black drug dealers in an abandoned factory. The story begins as Vince and Don, a pair of redneck Arkansas firemen, stumble upon a potential gold mine while extinguishing a blaze. Before burning to death, they meet a thief who confesses a million dollar crime. That is, he stole a collection of golden church artifacts and hid them in an abandoned factory. After confessing his crime, the thief hands the firemen a map. Seeing an opportunity they can’t ignore, the firemen-turned-fortune hunters rationalize their way around the need to return the treasure to its rightful owners. The movie climaxes in a showdown between the firemen and a cadre of black drug dealers, led by King James (Ice-T, of “Cop Killer” infamy).
Overall, the movie’s nonstop shooting, double-crossing and street language makes TRESPASS as entertaining and inspiring as a battle between piranhas and alligators. TRESPASS originally was called THE LOOTERS, a title deemed too inflammatory after last spring’s riots in Los Angeles. However, the new name is appropriate: all the characters are trespassers, not only in terms of property, but against God’s laws as well. Also, it is surprising to see talented screenwriters Robert Zemeckis and Robert Gale (who created BACK TO THE FUTURE) accepting the blame for this film’s relentless verbal sewage and general hatefulness.
