The first two episodes of Season Two of WHEN CALLS THE HEART is a dramatic two-part episode about a trial surrounding some dead mine workers and their widows, with a charming subplot about the show’s heroine, Elizabeth Thatcher, and her romantic travails.
The talk of the town is the big trial between the widows of the men who died in the mine and the mine’s owner. One specific widow, Abigail Stanton, is on trial because her husband was supposed to be in charge of the mining situation. Her attorney comes to town, but it turns out to be a woman. The widows are worried that their attorney is a woman and think also the judge may be corrupt. Will they be able to fight this battle and stand up for the truth?
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Thatcher hears word that her mother is sick and she must return home. Jack, the local Mountie, escorts her home. When arriving at her family’s home, Jack is overwhelmed by the size of the house and the amount of money Elizabeth’s family has.
Elizabeth is soon greeted by her childhood best friend, a good-looking young man named Charles who’s started working for her father. Charlie clearly has a romantic interest in Elizabeth, so her parents invite him to a dinner party. However, when Jack and Charlie show up, they both notice each one has an interest in Elizabeth. It’s now up to Elizabeth to decide who she will choose.
