A subplot is that Lacey is a teacher at a small school in financial trouble. A former boyfriend has a financial solution to fund a Christmas pageant and help the school, but it comes with an onerous stipulation that the pageant not honor Jesus Christ. This kind of comedy is a mild version of BAD GRANDPA and deserves extreme caution. It has lots of mild obscenities instead of hard obscenities, and the sex is in innuendos rather than sickening displays.

Madea (Tyler Perry dressed as a very large woman) has been in a series of reasonably popular “B” movie comedies where she says her mind on everything and salts all she says with mild obscenities. A MADEA CHRISTMAS includes a subplot about keeping Christ in Christmas, unfortunately the comedy is filled with sexual innuendoes and the aforementioned foul language.
The movie opens with Medea attempting to work at a department store during Christmas season, but she’s quickly fired for her crass treatment of customers. She then winds up on a trip with her niece Eileen to spend Christmas with her daughter Lacey. Lacey had been secretly married to Conner, a white farmer. Lacey has not informed her mother of the marriage and at first pretends her husband Conner is a hired farmhand. The plot thickens when Conner’s parents come to spend Christmas with their son knowing about the marriage. Madea winds up in the middle of the mess generally encouraging everyone to do the right thing, but spewing obscenities all along the way.

The comedy ties up all the lose ends, and provides several positive messages opposing bullying, racism and dishonesty. Madea would have difficulty keeping a job. She bluntly tells a middle aged woman looking for lingerie that she’s too old and fat for it. While some may see this as innocent comedy it actually looks hypocritical when a short while later the movie opposes verbal bullying.
This kind of comedy is a lighter version of BAD GRANDPA. It has mild obscenities instead of hard obscenities, and the sex is in innuendos rather than sickening displays. It should be possible to produce a comedy with some of the same plot lines and make it fit for family viewing. This is not fit for family viewing.
Tyler Perry is a very talented man who obviously works very hard. Movieguide would love to see him make a movie he would be proud to view with five-year-olds. Even better, one that would be welcome in almost any church in America. He could do this, and it just might be the most popular movie he’s ever made.
